When I visited Iceland several years ago, I picked up a novel by Arnaldur Indridason and have now read all his that have been translated into English. Coincidentally I came across an item about Bernard Scudder - Indridason's translator and found that Scudder had also translated for another Icelandic crime writer, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, who wrote - (and I am currently reading),'My Soul to Take'. I was able to purchase three of her books via Book Depository -and not only did they arrive within 10 days of online order, they were cheaper than through other online order services. I have a fellow writer, Shauna Bickley to thank for putting me onto Book Depository.
There's something fascinating about the writing of these two Icelandic writers:their ability to depict ordinary people caught up in extraorindary events that surround murder, and the manner in which both incorporate the Icelandic landscape into the story to create suspense.
As I continue to work on my current novel - up to the draft, I am looking closely at the development of suspense in a naturally occuring framework - and both Sigurdardottir and Indridason can teach me a great deal.
I recommend both these authors to fellow readers of crime.
